Binder Cane is made of the outer bark, or peel, of the Rattan Palm, a vinelike plant that grows mainly in the tropical forests and jungles of Southeast Asia. The processed Cane is used as a weaving material for chair seats and backs where it can be wrapped around the four sides of the frame. It is also used as the final step in French Caning, as well as a decorative and finishing element for wrapping Wicker and Rattan furniture. It is generally provided in Hanks of approximately 500 feet. One Hank of Binder Cane will weave the seat of one to one and a half ordinary kitchen chairs. The Jumbo rocker pictured below will require between two and three Hanks of Binder Cane. The most common patterns using Binder Cane are the Herringbone, the New England Antique Weave and the Carolina Closed Weave.
